Kidsong – The Mystery Part 2

Part one is here.

So on the first day all of the small groups (each child is in a small group of kids with a leader) got a ‘Cloodle’ which was a record of all the clues that we left around the Kidsong venues. Some were written in chalk in random places, some were read out from stage, some were texted to leaders and some were handed out on bits of paper. There were 18 clues in all and they had to fill out all the clues because on the last morning we revealed the final meta puzzle.

A letter out of each of the 18 clues was needed to create a final sentence to unlock where the ‘treasure’ was ultimately hidden.

One of our challenges each year is to create an exciting prize for the winning team (every child is allocated a tribe/pod for the conference). It’s hard on a limited budget to get a prize that is valuable for a few hundred kids and doesn’t cost your whole budget.

Every year we produce ‘trading cards‘ (coming in part three of this series) that we release each day and the kids go nuts trying to collect them all. Some are rarer than others and this year the rarest of all turned out to be the hidden treasure on the final day. We produced an unannounced 11th card for the winning team ONLY.

There were only a few hundred of this card and not many kids outside of the winning team would have got one. So after announcing the winning team and revealing the meta puzzle we produced the MAP and the winning team went to dig up their treasure.

Funny Story: My esteemed collegue Nathan Mclean, whom I charged to bury the aforementioned tresure only hours before it was revealed is still at the conference site looking for one of the packages (two primary school age groups = two different treasures). One thing I know, I will never let him forget his disastrous treasure finding abilities.

(Even with one lost we had enough to go around thank goodness).

Thanks to Elisha Suarez and her team of thespians who wrote our Mystery script, she did an absolutely magnificent job and I could not have imagined a better video series! Also thanks to our editors Logan, Eric, Josh and Nathan who did post audio! It all worked out in the end!

Here is part three of the video:

This is part four:

And here is the final wrap up of the whole thing, where the kids get to see all the secrets. This is shown on the final night of conference and recaps the entire week.

Coming in part three: The designs of the trading cards and the ‘cloodle’.

Plus other highlights from Kidsong World 2010!

Big Thanks

To our awesome Hillsong Church volunteers. Thanks!

Last weekend we took a moment during our services to say thanks to the 4779 people who pulled off our best conference yet! If you were one of them, then thanks so much, you rock!

Kidsong – The Mystery Part 1

So each year at our annual Hillsong Conference we host Kidsong World. This year was my 9th and I have been involved from my very first year in 2001 as a ‘Pod’ leader (all the kids are in teams), to now overseeing the whole thing.

The ages we take differ slightly from our weekend services so I thought I might run them down. Unlike normal services we don’t take kids from aged one, instead we run ‘playgroup‘ providing a fantastic area for parents to hang out with their kids and showing the service on screens. This complements our parenting rooms which are for all kids under one.

Our first program starts at aged two and we take 2-5 year old into our Ark program and they hang out mostly with the ‘Funhouse’ kids (Kindergarten & grade 1 at school). This is our ‘Early Childhood‘ program. They have Max and Melody shows and HK Team, our praise and worship team for young ones.

Our ‘Primary school‘ program starts at grade 2-4 (All Stars) and 5-6 (Voltage), they hang out together mostly and have similar programs. But as much as possible we provide different targeted experiences for all age groups.

We have found that split works well for such a long conference (9am-4ish and then a 2 hour night rally), we have these kids for a significant period of time. In fact every year I remind our volunteers that we will get as much time during conference than the rest of the year put together!

So in this post I want to focus on the ‘story’ of conference.

My main concern is of course the safety of our kids, but I really love focussing on the content of the week. Here was our theme this year. Each day of conference was a different theme, we are also using this theme for the month of July (5 Weekends).

BIG PICTURE: THE MYSTERY

BIG WORD: That Word contains the mystery that has been hidden for many ages…and here it is. Christ is in you. He is your hope of glory. Colossians 1:26-27 (NIrV)

1. BIG IDEA: OPERATION BLUEPRINT - BIG POINT: God’s Word is our Guide

2. BIG IDEA: CSI: CREATION STUDIES INSTITUTE  - BIG POINT: We can see God in His Creation

3. BIG IDEA: EVIDENCE UNEARTHED - BIG POINT: We can see God in History

4. BIG IDEA: DESIGNER GENES - BIG POINT: We can see God in His workmanship

5. BIG IDEA: TRUE LIVES - BIG POINT: We can see God in our lives

We make ‘teaching clips’ that are similar in style to our BIG Curriculum videos, but the exciting thing this year was the creation of the Mystery Videos. A five part video that engages kids in a mystery that they have to solve! Each morning they watched the next episode of the video and spent the day looking for clues that would help them solve the secrets of the Mystery.

Here is part one of the video:

And here is part two:

Hillsong Conf. Almost

All right!

(Yep that’s me in the hat)

New Tee Shirts!

So we have just launched new ministry tees this weekend at Hillsong Church.

So to all Hillsong Kids Leaders don’t forget to bring in your old tees leaders and trade them in, along with ten bucks if you can!

New Tees

I am really happy with the design – and the three colours are just options for our leaders to choose from. If you look in the top right of the design you can see our name tags that are printed out from our Biometric (fingerprint) ESI (Electronic Sign In) kiosks. So there is actually a spot to put the name tag now — looks smart!

Thanks to Ricky on our communications staff who hooked us up and pointed us in the right direction for suppliers!

NOTE: If you are wondering why we get our leaders to bring in old tees, its mainly because we don’t them showing up in second hand clothing stores and we hope to recycle the old ones for some purpose like tee shirt games for kids and even giving them to one of our new campuses in Europe.

Thoughts about Vision Sunday

Each year about this time (actually around the time of Super Bowl), we at Hillsong Church have our Superbowl event – Vision Sunday.

Pastor Brian presents to our whole church where he feels the Church is heading. Realigns us around purpose and points us toward Jesus our hope and future.

This year was the first time that the vision has been presented globally to all our family of Hillsong Churches, so it being Monday morning here in Australia that vision will have been presented and generated a lot of passion and excitement all over the world.

I am pretty sure the video will be put up online soon and will update this post when it is. UPDATE: http://www.myhillsong.com/visionsunday

The great thing about this year is that we focussed on people and their stories in a big way. It’s not so much about the big announcements (although a campus in New York is exciting), but more about becoming the kind of Church we need to be to impact this world.

Our Church has always been about connecting, equipping and serving people and in 2010 the opportunity to do just that will be greater than ever before.

So I am excited because every person that calls Hillsong Church home is called to greater participation in seeing the Kingdom of God advanced.

(It is cool seeing the New York link at the top of our website).

(It doesn’t link yet, but when it does)!!

:)

BIG Release Competition

So there is a twitter competition going on right now! In fact it just started.

Check out the official BIG website here: http://hillsongkidsbig.com/news/10/01/big-release-competition

All the rules and everything you need to know!

Oh and here is the latest on the release of Follow You!

Top Ten

A few #kidmin people have done Top Ten lists in the past few weeks.

I wanna do one too.

Not sure what kind of list to do though…

Thinks to himself… ‘if I want reader participation I should offer them an incentive’…

Okay, if you write a comment/suggestion of the top ten list I should do and I do it. Then you will win a copy of our new, yet to be released kids album. Hillsong Kids Ultimate Collection.

Of course it hasn’t been released yet so I of course be sending it to you after that takes place.

Why Use Media?

I would love to highlight one of the main reasons we use media with our kids during weekend services.

When I grew up in New Zealand there were only two TV channels, the appropriately named One and Two, so my friends and I watched the same TV programs:

Macgyver and Knight Rider

(I cried when Kitt ended up in the acid pool and they had to remake him. Episode 314 Junk Yard Dog).

It united us as kids and has given us a common language and reference.

This has all changed with the stunning width and breadth of media available today. Our media choices are used to differentiate and separate us into tribes/groups. Are you an emo kid, do you like Hip/Hop, or are you a fan of ?

One of the many reasons we use media in our services is to create a shared experience.

No matter which campus I go to, which of our extension services I attend there will be children who I share a common language with… not about just Disney or Nickelodeon but with our curriculum and the Big Message videos. We could talk about Funny Man Dan and his latest exploits or some song they saw last week and as the media is created to point towards our theme and (hopefully) toward Jesus the relevance to their lives should immediately obvious.

And just like today as the mist of time clouds my eyes as I think about Macgyver diffusing a bomb with a toothpick, or Michael Knight foiling an international plot I hope that our kids today will remember with fondness and hopefully understanding what they experienced as a child.

(This may turn into a series methinks)

So You Think You Can… Lead Kids

We just started a bit of a leadership promo here at church for the kids department.

We are calling it ‘So You Think You Can… Lead Kids’. Encouraging all of our leaders to invite one other person to lead our awesome kids – Kind of a ‘Double Your Impact’ month.

Check out the page here: hillsongkids.com/leadkids

Now I did this site pretty much myself using free tools online and put them on our site. And the video was edited with iMovie, but comment below if you would like to know the process of the deal and with enough interest I can lay it all down for ya!

:)

Love Never Fails

Enjoy this from our latest kids album:

I really am excited about this album, some very different tracks and also my first vocal ever… with Dan Lee-Archer (aka Funny Man Dan), a hip-hop groove called ‘Love Never Fails’.

Meeting positions

So in every service in Hillsong Kids we have various upfront positions rostered for our primary school programs.

And I always forget who ends up doing what.

So if I write them down here:

  1. It might just help me remember them
  2. If I forget, they are online for posterity

THE THREE M’S

MC – Responsible for the running of the service, welcomes kids etc. They also do the offering.

Ministry – Does our ask God, thank God prayer requests. And any time of ministry/prayer with the children.

Message – Does the message. Every service someone will bring a message to the children. Some services it may be longer than others.

There are a lot of other roles in a service, but these are three of the main one’s in terms of upfront/platform leaders.

A Hole Nutha Level!

Didn’t have a camera!

So had to steal a couple of shots from some friends on facebook. :)

Kidsfest 2008… album recording… the whole day…

God is good. The event REALLY was a huge blessing to our kids and our church!

Music Video Shoot

7am this morning, awoke and made my way to someone else’s house to start filming a music video for ‘Love Never Fails’, which just may turn out to be one of the most embarrassing things I have ever done.

Love Never Fails is a song written by myself and Gio Galanti, one of our kids album producers from Hillsong London. With help from Funny Man Dan in lyrics we have created this kind of Hip Hop track that talks about the fact that love never fails.

It’s not exactly praise and worship, so we are making a music video for it and including as maybe a little bonus on the album this year. But it was a whole lot of fun check out a couple of shots from the shoot with the ever imporessive Ben Field directing!

Ben peering into the little monitor to see what’s happening.

Dan filming last scene of day with a little help from our pro shaders :)

Giving birth

So it’s midnight and I just finished a song (hopefully) for our upcoming kids album.

My wife Beci is in bed and here I am all inspired about kids worshipping God and keeping her awake.

I think it will be a powerful song. Talking about Jesus being near, and wanting to spend the rest of our lives in His house. “I’m so glad you’re here, I’m so glad you’re near…” well I don’t want to ruin it :)

But man is it a process. Getting a song written is like giving birth to a baby that sometimes refuses to come out. Or at least that is our experience.

This year has proven to be just as tough as always to find the God songs. But I guess not much worthwhile is easy. The pain of creating can lead to great beauty.

I hope and pray that is true for this years album, that the kids at our church and ultimately around the world would encounter Jesus. Because if they do, they will never forget it. And they will never forget him.
