Giving an A

Ben Zander is one of my favourite people in the world — and up to this point I literally have only read one quote and two articles about him. But after reading this I am going to order this.

Ben is conductor for the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, and professor at the New England Conservatory of Music, and a pretty inspirational guy.

Ben… was faced with the same problem every year for 25 years: Teaching students who were in such a chronic state of anxiety over the measurement of their performance, they were reluctant to take creative risks…decided the best approach would be to give everyone an A, at the beginning of the course. The A was not intended as a way to measure someone’s performance against standards, but as an instrument to open them up to new possibilities.

Students were required to write a letter that began with “Dear Mr. Zander, I got my A because…” and they had to describe in as much detail as possible, how they came to achieve this “extraordinary grade.”

In writing their letters, Zander said students must “place themselves in the future, looking back, and report on all the insights they acquired and 25 mg paxil the milestones they attained during the year, as if those accomplishments were already in the past. Everything must be written in the past tense. Phrases such as ‘I hope,’ ‘I intend,’ or ‘I will’ must not appear.”

Give all your kids in your childrens ministry an A for performance this year. Start with your engaged kids… the ones who learn the memory verses, and tend to remember what you said last week. Then give the kids who present somewhat of a challenge an ‘A’ as well.

What needs to change in their behaviour to get an ‘A’? And more importantly what needs to change in YOUR behaviour to ensure they get an ‘A’.

NOTE: I am not, of course, implying that we want to grade our kids, just the concept that we are all familiar with having most likely grown up in school.

Influential Churches

Via The Church Report

This survey was sent to 2,000 church leaders with the goal of ranking the nation’s fastest growing churches and churches with more than 2,000 weekend attendance. The 127 churches 2000 mg msm nominated for the 50 Most Influential Churches survey were located in 32 states and represented 27 affiliation groups and/or denominations.

It would be fascinating to read about the 50 most influential Children’s Ministries in the world, and if they correlate to the 50 most influential churches…

On that note, what are your top five influences in your ministry to kids?

Leave a comment, I will need to think on it a bit.

If it’s good enough for the kids…

Here comes Da Vinci

Seeking truth at the movies

In 1988, Christians protested The Last Temptation of Christ; Campus Crusade for Christ even tried to buy the film prints in order to destroy them. But now those same 20 mg zetia groups are viewing “The Da Vinci Code” as an opportunity to share Christianity.

Churches Losing Choir Boys to Football and Computers

Britain’s cathedrals are facing the difficult challenge of filling the empty seats in their choirs as young boys turn away from traditional church worship to football and computer games.

Hint: I don’t think it’s football’s 20 mg prednisone fault.

What’s in a date?

6/6/06

Spooky isn’t it – 666…
True to form, a bunch of marketers have taken notice of this interesting date:
A 20 lexapro mg few things happening on the day.

  • The remake of the film The Omen opens in the US
  • Ann Coulter’s new book Godless is released
  • Heavy-metal band Slayer’s Unholy Alliance Tour: Preaching to the Perverted

Know of anything else? Post a comment.

The number 666 is firmly embeded in our pop-culture, even the Da Vinci code mentions it (apparently the number of panes of glass in the Louvre pyramid).

Back to reality – it will be a Tuesday like any other… except maybe there will be a few more ‘end time’ messages that Sunday :)

Groovers for God

In God We Trust

Article from youth Magazine 180 mg allegra Radar, interesting perspective from the media on the current interest in spirituality in Australia.

I wonder how this is affecting children? Are they growing up with this interest in God?

Hows the Blogosphere?

David Sifry (technorati.com) produces another “State of the Blogosphere”

So if you haven’t got a blog yet… what are you waiting for?

Ice Age 2

I haven’t seen it yet. But after receiving some very good reviews from some quite reliable reviewers… a couple kids and some kid-like adult friends, I am really looking forward to it.

Explore the message behind the media over at damaris.org to read a nice piece on the movie that you can expand to talk about with your kids.

Families can be a difficult subject in our increasingly fragmented society, and it is no surprise to find Ice Age 2 following on from the first film in exploring just what makes for a family. The implication, once again, is that it isn’t necessarily about being a traditional nuclear family, 150mg diflucan order but about being a close-knit group that functions as a family. Manny is beginning to think he is the last woolly mammoth alive. He justifies his unconventional ‘herd’ calling it, ‘One big, happy family. That’s the way it’s supposed to be.’ But he is uncomfortable when asked, ‘Then where’s your big happy family?’ Sid, sensitive as ever, teases him saying, ‘One truly is the loneliest number.’ read on

MC Hammer

Like a flashback to my early high school days when I used to sing “can’t touch this” in a very white New Zealand kinda way I was pumped to find out that MC Hammer has a blog!

http://mchammer.blogspot.com

Now the thing is this information is probably only interesting to people who ever sang “I got ta pray just to make it today” in the shower, or wore a pair of parachute 150 diflucan mg pants, it’s my blog I and I can write what I want! :)

Hammer is now an ordained minister and spends his time in ministry… so as a result I now have added a new goal to my life, to see Hammer preach!

Are we to be destroyed by ideas?

Media in my world is restricted to the ‘G’ kind. I do not want to spend my life on the phone to upset parents explaining why their children were exposed to PG.

When cinema defines most of our pop-culture references this is restrictive… communicating truth visually and cinematically is a powerful way to get through to kids.
My childhood is full of experiences with books. Now this may be due to the fact that I didn’t have a TV until I turned 12! But I certainly know that my book choices were censored by my parents (including Orsen Wells ‘The Invisible Man‘, I don’t really know why I remember that) and I am certainly not worse off for it.
If Harry Potter had been casting spells in the early eighties I am pretty sure I would have never been allowed to experience his magic. And I am sure you are aware of the publishing boon it has been to authors who need to rant against popular culture.

Townhall.com contributor Erik Lokkesmoe writes about 10 mistakes conservatives make in art and entertainment.

His article REALLY resonates with me… Resonates like a opera singer smashing glass with a High ‘C’ (that’s a lot).

This is not so much about our kids getting to see edgy cinema but more about the idea that wee need to train them to make right decisions. What is right for one person may be completely wrong for another (Alcoholics shouldn’t really order wine).

But as a child of a creative God, I should be by definition, as Erik puts it… curators of the good, the true, and the beautiful.

I want the WORLD to marvel at the genuis of children wholeheartedly devoted to their Jesus and expressing themselves in ways unimaginable to the unredeemed life.

Do You know who directed Narnia?

Probably not.

Cool article about Narnia – from the LA Times =====>

Close your eyes and try to imagine who I’m talking about: He’s a likable New Zealander who directs epic fantasies that have stretched the boundaries of computer-generated effects and made more money than many small countries – nearly $1 billion worldwide.

And, oh yes, his name isn’t Peter Jackson.

Squidoo

I am a lensmaster!!

A lens is one person’s (lensmaster’s) view on a topic he cares about. More specifically, a lens is a single web page filled with information and links that point to other web pages, to continually updated RSS feeds, or to relevant advertising. It’s a place to start, not finish.

http://www.squidoo.com/childrensministry/

So have a look at Squidoo – a site which you will be hearing a lot more from in the future – it is still in beta form, but is one of those ‘new media’ type companies… started by author Seth Godin. I will be expanding the lens bit by bit, but my goal is to make it THE place to get an overview of Children’s Ministry on the net.

Reality Hits

Every now and then you read something that brings back the reality of the times we live in.

Fifty babies a year are alive after abortion

Abortion on demand is allowed in Britain up to 24 weeks more than halfway through a normal pregnancy and the highest legal limit for such terminations in Europe. France and Germany permit ‘social’ abortions only up to the 10th and 12th weeks respectively.

The number of terminations carried out in the 18th week of pregnancy or later has risen from 5,166 in 1994 to 7,432 last year. Prenatal diagnosis for conditions such as Down syndrome is increasing and foetuses with the condition are routinely aborted, even though many might be capable of leading fulfilling lives. In the past decade, doctors skill in saving the lives of premature babies has improved radically: at least 70%-80% of babies in their 23rd or 24th week of gestation now survive long-term.

Key Quote:
“They can be born breathing and crying at 19 weeks gestation, he said. I am not anti-abortion, but as far as I am concerned this is sub-standard medicine.”

I really struggle when reading a story like this. It seems you can only be considered a human when someone ‘wants you’. If no one wants you, you are just a foetus – non human.

I guess this really hits home when I look at my wife who is 29 weeks pregnant, knowing that the life inside her is loved and wanted.

God Bless.
