What, say what?

I love Christian graphic design… just make sure that it all works together… or you might send the wrong message :)

I just found this while idly browsing through some Church sites… I don’t know anything about the conference, but what I do know is that they need a little work on their logo :)

SummerCamp 2011

So last Friday we returned from an epic SummerCamp with our preteens (Voltage) group.

Lot’s more to write about it, but here is a quick highlights video from our Youth team that includes a sweet flyover of our Voltage camp.

SummerCamp 2011 Highlights

For the first time ever we covered a topic that is sorely needed in our culture – purity. I will be posting the notes I used to talk about this sensitive topic soon, and also giving some insight to the feedback we got from parents.

More uses for Children

I just knew there was another use for kids!

7 Billion

What kind of world will our children inherit?

7 Billion, National Geographic

With the worldwide population expected to exceed seven billion in 2011, National Geographic magazine offers a 7-part series examining specific challenges and solutions to the issues we face. The magazine introduces the series with its January cover story “7 Billion,” offering a broad overview of demographic trends that got us to today and will impact us all tomorrow. The first in-depth story will appear in the March issue, focusing on humans’ impact on the planet’s geology. Other stories will follow throughout 2011.

Monkeys and Wedding Dresses

Monkey Wedding

This post has nothing to do with monkeys and wedding dresses.

But what if it was!

I know one thing, when you search “monkeys and wedding dresses” on google later this week, this post will definitely appear in the top results!

But that’s because there is not much competition for the search phrase. In fact I may be one of the first people to search for it this year (so we’re only five days in, there are a lot of weird searches happening right now let’s be honest).

There is more competition in the phrase “children’s ministry blog” but I manage to squeak into 5th place in Google. But still, not many people in the world are searching for that term. So what if I am number one in the term “david wakerley”, no one is searching for that.

Interestingly I get a lot of traffic at Christmas time for the term “whoville names“. It seems a post I wrote in 2007 still appears at the top of Google.

Anyway.

As I start 2011 I want to make sure that I am scratching where people are itching. Where is the need? Being a computing expert specialising in Windows 3.1 is an exercise in futility. It’s irrelevant.

Being an expert in what everybody needs right now is helpful, but still not the goal. We need to be ready to help where people don’t realise they need help yet.

  • Where is the family going to hurt in the future?
  • What is the child going to go through soon?
  • How will our culture affect people?

God bless the scratch.

Merry Ho Ho

Merry Christmas 2010.

From all of us here at davidwakerley.com (and by all of us I mean me and various assorted chocolates that have found there way into blog headquaters) (and by blog headquarters I mean wherever my computer happens to be).

Almost…

I almost sat down to write something of substance on this somewhat neglected blog, but instead you get a video of Cookie Monster trying out to host Saturday Night Live.

I hope that will be okay for now…

Rize up

In our latest curriculum: Supernatural, we are trying something different — the first two series had memory verse segments using actions and spoken word. In this one we have gone for songs that teach straight scripture.

So I can identify with a brand new album from Seattle Dads Tyson Paoletti and Greg Lutze, they have created the Rizers (short for Memorizers).

Writing songs to straight scripture can be quite restricting flomax mg and a challenge and these guys have done a magnificent job! I love music that comes out of local Churches, especially responding to a need, in this case teaching their kids scripture.

Here is a preview of some of the tracks:

And a vid of the creators talking about the project:

Check it out at their website therizers.com

I love that like Gorillaz it’s basically a virtual band. Gracie (lead vocals), Matty C. (guitar and vocals), Mei Mei (keytar) , A-Yo (drums) and Johnny Danger (bass). This is a cool way to help kids connect with the group while keeping the focus off personalities/superstars.

Anyway, enjoy!

20 to Watch

The latest edition of Children’s Ministry Magazine, as part of their 20th celebration features an article called 20 to Watch.

I haven’t got the print version yet (it’s a long boat to Australia), but just checked out the article online.

They wrote a particulary great sentence that sums up a big part of my passion about kids!

David wants the church to lead the way in innovative educational models for children. He has “a real hope for a revolution in the homes of our families” so there’s “a radical Christian counter-culture, not just a Christian subculture.”

Nice!

I don’t think I could have said it better myself. We have an opportunity in this generation to revolutionise learning and engage our kids better than any other institution on earth!

It is really an honour to be a part of this amazing list. I moved to Australia with my wife Beci to attend Bible College and then go back to New Zealand, what God had planned is far above anything I could hope for or imagine. Two boys, a bunch of albums, curriculum, thousands of kids impacted over the years and to be part of this incredible Church called Hillsong.

So thanks to Christine and her team!

Watch this ALL the way thru

3 year old Jonathan conducting to the 4th movement of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony… Jonathan’s passion for classical music became apparent when he was only eight months old. Shortly after that he began conducting on his own.

This video might just be better than Grover doing old Spice guy!

In fact I declare it my favourite video of all time I love it so much. If you work with flomax 0.2 mg kids you should watch this especially the last few seconds, there is a lot to be learned about joy for you and me.

3 Year Old Conducting

Money & Mouth Together

I have talked long about the Church and Christians creating culture. We have lost our cultural impact because we have resorted to parody and imitation. Our kids need to grow up with an understanding that as they serve a creative God they can also create/inspire and lead the way as a creative force in the world.

So long story short… I read, along with millions of others Don Millers book ‘Blue Like Jazz‘. Well it’s going to be made into a movie because I and thousands of others have invested in it’s production!

Who knows what the movie is going to be like, but the important thing is action. I am supporting the creation of art that will have cultural impact.

That’s what I was trying to say

Alfred Hitchcock was quoted as saying the following:

“Once the screenplay is finished, I’d just as soon not make the film at all. I have a strongly visual mind. I visualize a picture right down to the final cuts. I write all this out in the greatest detail in the script and then I don’t look at the script while I’m shooting. I know it all by heart, just as an orchestra conductor needs not look at the score. When you finish the script, the film is perfect. But find cialis cheap in shooting it you lose perhaps forty percent of your original conception.”

(HT: Owl City Blog)

That’s exactly it.

Everything creative I attempt is perfect in my head.

Its the execution that ‘muddies the water’ so to speak and what comes out is… mostly silver/gold with a hint of platinum in a few places. Those ideas that actually make it through unsullied by the 37 steps it took to get to the final result.

I really love those moments!

(Funny Man Dan would agree I think)
