Infants and Salvation

What happens to infants when they die?
I was very interested to read this page as John Piper and the Desiring God website give their take on the question.
Great brain fodder!

I have a hard time with the concept of original sin particularly because it is applied in this sense. I also have a hard time with the idea that children are born evil and sinful.
On the contraray, I would be one who would err on the side of grace toward the children from God when they die at very young ages (please do not try to get me to nail down an “age of accountability” because I won’t offer it).
To beleive that either God has already decided the eternal destiny of that child or to believe that that child has the mark of evil on them and therefore they are not forgiven does not show a loving, gracious God. This would also be very difficult to try and share with the parents of the child who died. The parents want to hear the assurance that they will be reunited with this child in heaven.
So I don’t have a solid answer but I certainly do not believe that the children are banished from God’s presence before they are even born. What happens when they die? Well lets leave that up to God, trusting in Him to be the gracious and compassionate father that we serve.
I guess I always evisioned God welcoming any child who comes home early with open arms. Too hard to think of it any other way…
